CATDOLL: How to process mealworms

1. How to process mealworms

The main products currently developed are:

1. Fried mealworms The larvae and pupae of mealworms are cleaned, blanched, drained, and then stir-fried or fried. Add seasonings and you can eat. It is rich in nutrition and has a unique flavor.

2. Quick-freezing mealworms: Wash the mealworms, shape and select them after removing impurities, then put them into food-grade plastic bags, seal them, and send them to the quick-freezing workshop for quick freezing. The products can be stored at -18℃.

3. Processing of canned mealworms: Select the complete larvae or pupae of mealworms, and make canned food with different flavors through different seasoning processes such as steaming, braising, frying, and spice pickling, so as to make it durable, nutritious, unique in taste, and easy to eat. The process flow is as follows:

Cleaning and removing impurities from insect bodies → washing → curing → seasoning → canning → exhaust → sealing → sterilization → heat preservation inspection → cooling → finished product

4. Production of "Han Shrimp Powder" series products: Mealworms are cleaned of impurities, disinfected, solidified, dried, and then ground into powder, which is called "Han Shrimp Powder". The specific process is as follows:

Cleaning and removing impurities from insect bodies → cleaning → curing → decolorization → baking → grinding → screening → finished product

5. Processing of mealworm paste: Fresh mealworms are selected and treated to remove impurities and secretions from the digestive tract, then cleaned and ground into paste. At the same time, auxiliary materials such as edible oil, soybean powder, sesame, and chili are added to make various snack fillings such as crisp candy fillings and moon cake fillings to make processed snacks. The process flow is as follows:

Fresh mealworms → cleaning and removing impurities → washing → grinding → mixing → finished product

6. The processing of mealworm soy sauce uses fresh mealworms with complete bodies, normal odors, and no decay. After strict cleaning and impurities removal, water grinding, pH adjustment, enzyme hydrolysis of protein, filtration, sterilization, seasoning and coloring, etc. Mealworm soy sauce is rich in nutrition, delicious, rich in fragrance, and has no bad aftertaste. According to testing, it has a high amino acid content and is rich in sodium, potassium, iron, calcium and other trace elements, vitamins and some functional ingredients. The taste after adding 5 times of water is comparable to ordinary soy sauce. Therefore, this product is a condiment with high nutritional value and great development prospects. The specific process flow is as follows:

Fresh mealworms → cleaning → sorting → adding 3 times water to grind → adjusting pH value → adding enzyme to hydrolyze → heating in water bath → inactivating enzyme → filtering → adjusting pH value → sterilizing → seasoning and coloring → stirring → filtering → packaging → sealing → inspection → finished product

7. The processing of yellow mealworm health wine is to select mature yellow mealworms, clean and remove impurities, solidify, dry and dehydrate them, add red dates and wolfberries and soak them in white wine for 1-2 months. This tonic wine is ruddy in color and sweet in taste. It has the effects of calming the mind, nourishing the heart, strengthening the spleen, and promoting blood circulation. In addition, the method of adding yellow mealworm powder to the white wine can make the effective ingredients in it completely extracted to improve the health function of the insect wine.

2. How to manage the egg laying of adult mealworms?

The management methods for egg laying of adult mealworms are as follows:

First, the egg-laying box is composed of two boxes, one is the egg-laying mesh box, and the other is the breeding wooden box. Spread wheat bran on the bottom of the breeding wooden box, put the egg-laying mesh box on the wooden box, and put it in place. The most suitable number of adults in each box is 500 to 800.

Second, the hatching of mealworm eggs is greatly affected by temperature and humidity. When the temperature rises, the egg period shortens; when the temperature drops, the egg period prolongs. When the temperature is below 15 degrees Celsius, the eggs rarely hatch; when the temperature is 25-32 degrees Celsius, the humidity is 60-70%, and the humidity of the bran is about 15%, the larvae can hatch in 7-10 days.

3. When mealworms hatch, more larvae of the same batch can be placed in the same box for feeding. Feeding and management during this period are relatively simple, mainly controlling the feed temperature to 24-32 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity of the air to 60-70 percent. Often sprinkle a small amount of chopped vegetable leaves on the surface of wheat bran. You can also spray an appropriate amount evenly on the surface of the feed wheat bran, mix the surface wheat bran about 1 cm thick, and make its moisture content reach about 17%. When the wheat bran is eaten and turned into micro-spherical insect feces, you can sprinkle some more wheat bran appropriately. When it reaches one month old and becomes a medium larvae, you can sieve it with a 1 mm sieve. After sieving out the insect feces, the remaining medium larvae can be raised in separate boxes.

Yellow mealworms, also known as mealworms, belong to the order Coleoptera in insect taxonomy. According to expert testing and analysis, the fat content of fresh yellow mealworms is 28.20%, and the protein content is as high as 61%. In addition, it also contains macroelements such as phosphorus, potassium, iron, sodium, aluminum, and a variety of trace elements, as well as 18 kinds of amino acids necessary for animal growth. Every 100 grams of dry product contains up to 947.91 micrograms of amino acids. Its various nutritional components rank first among all kinds of foods, and it is known as the "treasure house of protein feed."

According to feeding tests, the nutritional value of 1 kg of mealworms is equivalent to that of 25 kg of wheat bran, 20 kg of mixed feed and 100 kg of green feed. However, the cost of using mealworms directly as feed raw materials after drying and crushing is relatively high, and the price is extremely unstable. The powder of mealworms after deep processing of defatting is more commonly used in feed, that is, defatted mealworm powder.

Mealworms contain high protein and free amino acids, which are 50-100 times that of mammals and 11 times that of milk. They are also rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K and water-soluble vitamins B. Vitamin B1 is 15 times that of milk, vitamin B2 is 1800 times that of milk, and vitamin B6 is 52 times that of milk. In addition, they contain macro-mineral elements such as calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium, and trace mineral elements such as iron, zinc, copper, manganese, cobalt, chromium, selenium, boron, and iodine. The nutrient content is much richer than that of milk and meat. Under the principle of "reasonable diet and balanced nutrition", the pursuit of green insect pupa dishes has become a fashion and is highly favored by people.
