CATDOLL: What does black carp eat?

What are the feeding habits of black carp?

Grass carp feed on water and dry grass, while black carp feed on benthic animals. They have one thing in common: they both have well-developed throat teeth. However, the length of their intestines in the adult stage is different. The intestines of grass carp are generally three times the length of the body, while the intestines of black carp are shorter, about 1.4 times the length of the body. The length of the fish's intestines is determined by the difficulty of the fish in digesting bait.

Temperature for grass carp? Fishing for black carp?

To know how to fish for black carp, you must first understand its living habits. Black carp mainly lives in the middle and lower layers of the water. It feeds mainly on river clams, cockles, and snails. It grows quickly and is large and heavy, ranking first among the "four major fishes" in traditional aquaculture. After autumn, the weather is cool and black carp eats actively, which is a good time to fish for black carp.

Choice of fishing gear: Herrings are strong and have good endurance. The hand rod should be a thick fiberglass rod with a hard rod body, 8 meters in length, and a fishing line with a diameter of 0.

35-0.5mm high-strength line (if using Dyneema or Becker Fire Line, it is best), use 8-11 Gamma-Cartz black hooks. The fishing gear combination can use a long float with a single hook or double hooks, and the sea rod must be equipped with a rear drag reel that can store 100 meters of fishing line with a diameter of 0.4mm.

Bait: Black carp are used to eating snails and river clams, and are particularly interested in their meat. Crush them with their shells and throw them into the fishing spot as bait.

Black carp has a large appetite, so the bait must be large enough to attract fish. You can also crush snails and clam meat, mix it with fresh rice, wheat bran, and rapeseed cake powder, and knead it into a ball. It can be thrown into the water as bait, or kneaded into a bait ball of appropriate hardness and softness and put on the explosive hook.

Bait: When using the above bait to make a nest, you must use clam meat, snail meat, and shrimp as bait to catch herring.

There are two ways to hook a snail: one is to directly smash the snail shell, remove the shell and take out the meat, insert the hook tip from the head and out from the tail; the other is to select a snail with a complete shell and insert it from the edge of the back shell, and then pass it through the small hole at the tail, with the hook tip slightly exposed. For clam meat, the shelled clam meat can be cut into strips and put on the hook. Shrimp can be shelled or not. Insert the hook from the tail of the shrimp and out from the neck. Remove the thorny shrimp whiskers on the shrimp head and it can be used.

Fishing spot selection: Black carp is cautious and likes to move in deeper water. The bigger the fish is, the less willing it is to move to the side. In autumn, it is best to choose places where snails and clams live at the bottom of the water as fishing spots. Of course, places with obstacles such as wood piles and stones in the water are also ideal fishing spots.

Weather selection: Fishing is best when the sky is clear and there is a breeze. The small waves created by the breeze blowing across the water surface increase the amount of dissolved oxygen underwater, making the fish feed actively and having a high rate of taking the bait.

You can also go fishing on rainy days, and sometimes the amount of fish caught can exceed that on sunny days.

After making a nest, if you find a black carp star emerging, you can put bait on the hook and start fishing. When the black carp bites the hook, the float reacts steadily and sluggishly. At the beginning, the float does not fluctuate much, but then it sinks and does not rise. This is different from the situation of other fish biting the hook. This is because the teeth of the black carp grow deep in the mouth, and it eats the snails until it is swallowed into the throat before biting.

When fishing with shelled snails, you can lift the rod later. When using shrimps and mussels as bait, you should lift the rod when the float shows a large rise and fall, otherwise the fish will easily escape. When fishing with a sea rod, the phenomenon of inching rarely occurs. Most of the time, the tip of the rod is bent and cannot rise. Anglers must pay attention to this phenomenon when fishing at night. If you hear the bell ring once and then no second sound, it may be that a big herring has taken the hook.

After the black carp is hooked, it will either charge forward with its large size or dive headfirst into the mud and not react to any movement you make. When you are wondering if it has hooked a tree stump, it will take the opportunity to jump out and play tug-of-war with you, break the fishing line and run away.

When using a sea rod, this phenomenon often occurs: you find that a fish has taken the hook and you can feel it when you lift the rod, but when you reel it in, the hook seems to be empty.

When you carelessly hook the fish to the shore, you find that the black fish is shaking its head and tail and then running away like a mad bull. This is a trick that big black fish often do. Unprepared anglers often let the fish slip away at this time. Therefore, when using a sea rod to fish, you must first adjust the drag device of the reel to prepare for the black fish to rush out.

my country has a vast territory and numerous reservoirs. Black carp, one of the four major carps, is raised in many reservoirs, especially in Hunan, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Anhui and Zhejiang regions, where black carp is the main freshwater breeding.

Black carp prefers animal bait, because of this, its meat is thick, its body is strong, and its strength and endurance are great, making it difficult to catch, which makes it a favorite fishing target for many anglers.

Due to the influence of their living environment, the black carp in the reservoir mainly feed on snails, larvae of clams and shrimps, but during the peak feeding period, they will also accept vegetarian food such as corn, wheat bran and vegetable cakes.

During the cold winter, black carp hibernates in deep water and basically does not eat until mid-spring of the following year, when it swims to shallow water to feed like other fish. The hot August and September are its peak feeding period. After November, as the temperature drops, its appetite decreases until it stops eating.

When fishing for black carp in a reservoir, you need to choose the appropriate method based on its feeding characteristics. Both hand rods and sea rods can be used, but you have to choose at the right time. In spring, as the temperature gradually rises, black carp swim from the colder deep water to the relatively warm shallow water to feed. Therefore, after mid-April is the best time to fish with a hand rod, while sea rods are unlikely to be effective at this time.

For hand-pole fishing, you should choose a water area with a depth of more than two meters near the reservoir. Because black carp have a large appetite, you need to use enough bait to attract them. The bait can be a mixture of coarse cornmeal, rice, bran, and rapeseed cake and thrown into the water. The proportion is not limited. Commercial bait, earthworms, shrimps, and snail meat can all be used as bait. Black carp will swim to shallow water to feed at a fixed time every day. The time period varies with the geographical environment of each reservoir. It is generally around 9 o'clock in the morning and around 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Therefore, anglers must have enough patience.

The hand pole line should be a strong line of 0.4 mm or more. Single or double hooks are OK. The hook does not have to be too big, as long as it is strong enough. The end of the pole should be fastened with a safety rope. The signal of a black carp taking the hook is that the float sinks steadily. If a big fish is hooked, it will rush forward with great pain. At this time, do not try to fight it. You should abandon the pole immediately and grab the safety rope, and use the elasticity of the elastic band to consume the black carp's strength until it is exhausted.

Generally, the grass carp caught by hand rod are less than 10 kg, and the success rate is extremely low when encountering grass carp over 20 kg.

In the hot August and September, black carps mostly stay in deep water to cool off, and this is the golden season for sea fishing.

The length of the sea fishing rod should be more than 2 meters, and 0.5 mm fishing line should be used. The length should be more than 100 meters (I have encountered a situation where a herring bit the hook and pulled the line and swam away for 200 meters without looking back). The line will not work if it is too short.

The fishing spot for sea fishing should be the old river channel in the reservoir, where the water is deep or people often visit the fishing place. If you want to fish here for several days, you can borrow a fisherman's boat to scatter a lot of bait into the deep water to form a bait belt seven or eight meters wide, and use floats to locate the two ends. At this time, you can use egg-sized bait to increase the viscosity, and embed the hook tip into the bait ball with the hook facing outward. Don't ask for a short time to dissolve, and directly use the sea pole to throw it into the fishing spot. The line should not be too tight to prevent the bait from shifting and losing the advantage of spreading the nest; if you only fish for one day and don't put down a big bait, the bait on the bomb hook should be as big as a fist, and the bait should not be too sticky. It will dissolve in the water for a few minutes. As long as it can ensure that it does not disperse when the line is tightened, it will be fine. However, you can't throw such heavy bait directly with a casting rod at this time. You can only throw it with your hands, and the throwing point must be accurate so that you can change the food many times to form a bait area.

However, the catch is less than the former, and only passing fish can be caught. For sea fishing, you can add appropriate amount of shrimp powder and snail meat to the bait of hand pole. When there are many small fish, put less rapeseed cake to prevent small fish from disturbing the hook. The signal of sea fishing for black carp is that the bell does not ring or the pole body bends down sharply after a slight ring or the pole body rises and falls steadily without ringing. It is completely different from other fish that ring loudly and shake violently after biting the hook.

After being hooked, the black carp will immediately jump out with all its might. At this time, it is very important to adjust the drag force of the fishing reel. It should not be too tight to allow it to break the fishing line, nor should it be too easy to pull it straight away. After the black carp pulls the line away, it will sink to the bottom and remain motionless. At this time, you can hit the fishing line, and when it feels pain, it will follow the line back or continue to escape. When you are sure that the fish is no longer able to struggle, you can lead it to the shore and ask someone to go into the water and grab the gills to drag it ashore, or use a long-handled hook to hook the belly of the fish with few scales and drag it ashore. Do not hook the back and sides of the fish, because the scales of large black carps are very thick, like plastic sheets, and are not easy to be hooked through.

Black carp was originally called herring. It was introduced to Taiwan for breeding only a few decades ago. It is said that it was mixed with grass carp fry. This different fish was discovered after it grew up. We call it [black carp] because of its black body. Black carp is suitable as a target fish for fishing due to its large size and strong swimming ability. In addition, it has strong vitality. As long as it is not seriously injured, it will rarely die after being caught and released, and it will come back to feed in a short time. Fish with such conditions are not only enjoyable to catch, but also loved by anglers, so pond owners also like to release black carps for anglers to fish.

How to find some bait to attract fish? What kind of bait and fishing gear are suitable for different fishing grounds?

Reservoir blacktail fishing rig

The water depth at the Sun Moon Lake blacktail fishing grounds is more than thirty or forty feet, and the fish mostly feed at the bottom. Due to the vast waters, you must cast bait at fixed points or fish at places where anglers often cast their rods. There are often some baits thrown at the points where anglers fish, and fish will naturally gather when there is something to eat.

The above is the fishing rig commonly used by senior anglers in Sun Moon Lake, which is specially designed for big black catfish. Since the water depth at the fishing spot is about 40 feet, bottom fishing is used instead of float fishing. The fish signal of bottom fishing depends on the tail of the rod to transmit, and the sub-line should not be too long. If the sub-line is too long, the fish signal will not be clear. Although it is a wild black catfish, there are people fishing at the fishing spots where there are fish in the reservoir almost every day. The fish are very cautious when they see the bait. In addition, when the deep-field bait sinks, the sub-line is too long and it is easy to get tangled up. It will not automatically untie when it sinks to the bottom of the water. I am afraid you will wait in vain. Pay attention to these fishing details.

Shallow field blacktail fishing rig

Some fishing spots are shallow, and the fish will be a little further from the shore, so the fishing gear needs to be changed. The fishing method can also use the general pond fishing float fishing gear and bottom sinking intuition fishing gear.

The water depth suitable for fishing with floats should be within 15 feet. Since shallow fishing grounds require long casts and will be affected by wind and current, the float specifications should be No. 2~3 (two to three cents in weight), otherwise it will be difficult to cast, and the float will sink when the wind blows or the current flows, and no signal of fish for bait can be seen.

The fishing platform is set up like normal pond fishing, with both baits close to the bottom.

In the bottom fishing method, the 5-hook rig is also a common method used by black catfish anglers. The catch rate is naturally higher when 5 hooks are used at a time, and more baits can also attract fish. It should be noted that the sub-line is thicker, the main line cannot be too thin, and the strength of the fishhook should be paid more attention to, otherwise it will be a pity if the big fish you have waited for with great difficulty gets off the hook and runs away. I once straightened the fishhook and the fish slipped away. This kind of fishing rig is mostly for challenging big fish. The coordination of the entire fishing rig and the rod and line must be appropriate to successfully catch the big fish.
