When are river clams available?

River mussels are full of treasures. They can not only form natural pearls, but also artificially cultivate pearls. The meat of river mussels is edible, and the shells are Chinese medicinal materials. The reproductive season of mussels is generally in summer, and the young are raised and hibernated in the gill cavity. There are more river mussels after the Dragon Boat Festival. In this season, the river mussels are fatter and the meat is tender.

When do river clams reproduce?

The reproductive season of clams is generally in summer. They breed into larvae and hibernate in the gill cavity. In the spring of the following year, the larvae hatch and develop into the larvae of the river clams. After 2 to 5 weeks, they metamorphose into young clams, break the sac and leave the fish body, and sink to the bottom of the water to live. It takes 5 years to reach sexual maturity. They continue to grow. If you go to the countryside to catch clams in summer, you will find that river clams grow in fresh water. River clams usually stay in the mud holes under the water, with only a little exposed outside the hole. If you touch it, you can hook it with a wire hook to pull it out. You can't pull it out with your hands without a hook!

The growth environment of river clams

In the natural environment, clams generally live in muddy, sandy or gravelly areas such as rivers, lakes, ponds and streams. In the cold winter and spring, they use their axe feet to dig into the mud, so that the clam body is partially buried in the mud, with the front ventral edge facing downward and the back dorsal edge facing upward; only the rear edge of the shell is exposed for breathing and feeding. In hot weather, most of it is exposed outside the mud. Toothless clams generally live in muddy bottoms, still water with a pH value of 5 to 9 or slow-flowing, relatively fertile water.

Distribution range of river mussels

The toothless clams and the pleated crown clams are distributed throughout the country.

The triangular fan clam is mainly distributed in medium and large rivers in Jiangsu, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Zhejiang and other places.
