Can a forty-year-old golden coin turtle still lay eggs?

The fertility of golden coin turtles is amazing! Three golden coin turtles, all over 60 years old, can lay more than 10 eggs each this year.

(source:)

Golden coin turtles grow slowly, and their gonads generally mature and they begin to mate when they are over 6 years old. Mature golden coin turtles frequently move and feed from May to October; they begin to mate in the early morning or evening of autumn (September to October) when the temperature is around 20-25℃. When the water temperature rises to around 25℃ in June of the following year, female turtles begin to lay eggs, which last until the end of July or early August. They lay eggs 3-4 times in total, with 3-4 eggs each time.

Before laying eggs, the female turtle will choose a shallow sand pile with soft soil or dig a hole under the roots of trees and grass, then lay eggs in the hole, cover the hole with sand, and press it flat with her body before leaving. Under natural conditions, the hatching of golden coin turtle eggs is easily affected by external natural conditions such as climate, light, natural enemies, etc., so the incubation time is longer and the hatching rate is lower.

This question is not a good one.

Does anyone know when the Southern Stone Turtle lays eggs? What factors may affect it?

Whether the southern golden coin turtle lays eggs early or late is mainly determined by the following three factors:

1. Temperature. The higher the temperature, the earlier the turtle wakes up from hibernation, and the earlier it lays eggs; the lower the temperature, the later the turtle wakes up from hibernation, and the later it lays eggs.

2. Food intake. The earlier the turtle eats, the faster it recovers after the winter and the earlier it lays eggs. The later the turtle eats, the slower it recovers after the winter and the later it lays eggs. It usually takes 15-30 days for breeding turtles to recover their functions and start laying eggs after waking up from hibernation.

3. Environment. If you have just purchased a new breeding turtle, or the breeding turtle has just changed its egg-laying environment, the egg-laying time will be relatively delayed; if the breeding turtle has already laid eggs in the original egg-laying pond and has adapted to the egg-laying environment, the egg-laying time will be relatively early.

Affected by these factors, the egg-laying period of the southern species of golden coin turtles in Guangdong and Guangxi is generally from April to July of the Gregorian calendar each year. However, in some areas where the temperature is low and the breeding turtles are fed late, the egg-laying time of the breeding turtles will be delayed to May to August.
