How to distinguish male and female green turtle hatchlings?

How to distinguish male and female green turtles:

Method 1: Look at the tail.

The male has a long and slender tail and anus far from the tail base. The cloaca is closer to the posterior edge of the plastron, and the notch formed by the two anal shields of the plastron is shallow and has a larger angle.

On the contrary, the female has a thick and short tail and the anus is close to the base of the tail. The cloaca is farther away from the posterior edge of the plastron, and the notch formed by the two anal shields of the plastron is deeper and the angle of the notch is smaller.

Method 2: Look at the plastron. If the plastron is concave, it is a male, otherwise it is flat, it is a female. You can turn the turtle over and feel the arc with your fingers.

Small juvenile turtles (weighing less than 250 grams) are difficult to identify because they are sexually immature. Female turtles of the same age are always larger than male turtles.

Simply put, there are four main reasons to distinguish between male and female turtles:

1. Front paws: male’s are long, female’s are short.

2. Tail: The male's is thick and long, while the female's is short.

3. Cloaca: On the outside of the anal shield in males and on the inside of the anal shield in females.

4. Turtle shell: The male's shell is short and wide, while the female's is long and narrow.
