CATDOLL: How many types of bee diseases are there?

There are many types of bee pests and diseases. In summary, there are infectious pests and diseases caused by biological factors and non-biological factors, and non-infectious pests and diseases. Infectious pests and diseases are further divided into infectious pests and diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms and invasive pests and diseases caused by parasites according to the different infection methods.

The main infectious diseases and pests of bees are:

(1) Viral diseases.

The main ones include sac brood disease, paralysis disease, bee pupa disease, cloud wing virus disease, and Egyptian honey bee virus disease.

(2) Bacterial diseases.

The main ones are American foulbrood, European foulbrood, septicemia and paratyphoid.

(3) Spiroplasmosis.

The main one is bee spiroplasmosis.

(4) Fungal diseases.

The main ones are chalk disease, aflatoxin disease and bee ovary melanosis.

(5) Protozoan diseases.

The main ones are bee sporozoan chitosan disease, bee amoebiasis, etc.

(6) Parasitic mites.

The main ones are Varroa jasperi (large bee mite), Laelaps glabrecitoni (small bee mite) and Bee shield mite (tracheal mite).

(7) Parasitic insects and nematodes.

The main ones are bee flies, humpback flies, medlar flies, round-headed flies, bee lice and nematodes.

The main non-infectious diseases and pests of bees include wing curl disease, frostbitten larvae, egg blight, jujube flower disease, camellia poisoning, nectar poisoning, as well as pollen, nectar and pesticide poisoning.

In addition, according to the insect stage of the diseased bees, the main bee diseases and pests include bee egg disease, larval disease, bee pupa disease and adult bee disease.

1. Cystic brood disease

As the name suggests, sac brood disease is a larval infection. After the pathogen infects the young bee ants, the larvae will be outdoors with their heads upturned, and their appearance will be like a boat, sac-shaped. This disease occurs in the larvae, so there is no specific medicine to treat it. The only way to solve it is to remove the queen bee from the hive, wait for the bees to clean up the diseased insects, and disinfect the hive.

2. Larvae rot

There are two types of larval rot: American larval rot and European larval rot. American larval rot is caused by Bacillus larvae infection. When the disease occurs, the larvae die in brown color and have a fishy smell. When found, the dead bodies are cleaned up in time, disinfected, and treated with drugs. European larval rot is caused by infection with Apis mellifera. When the larvae die, they shrink in a spiral shape and have a bad smell. Similarly, the dead bodies are cleaned up, disinfected, and treated with drugs.

3. Chalk disease

Infected with Ascocystis mellifera, the larvae will die, white berries will form on the surface of the larvae, and finally turn into gray-white lumps. The treatment method is to replace the disinfected honeycomb in time, burn the old honeycomb, feed professional fungicides with syrup, and strengthen warmth and ventilation. It can be eliminated in about half a month.

4. Sporozoan disease

Sporozoites parasitize in the intestines and stomachs of bees, causing the digestive function of bees to decline or disappear. Over time, the syrup eaten will swell the intestines and stomachs, making them unable to fly, and eventually die of exhaustion, weakening the bee colony. You can add metronidazole to the syrup and feed it to eliminate it.

5. Varroa mites

It mainly parasitizes on bees. When it grows to maturity, it lays eggs in the hive and sucks the body fluids of the larvae, causing the young bees to grow poorly after leaving the hive, lose their ability to fly, and weaken the bee colony. Special acaricides can be used to spray them regularly.
