CATDOLL: Are grasshoppers and locusts the same thing?

Grasshoppers and locusts are the same thing.

Introduction

Locust (grasshopper) is also known as "grasshopper", "grass moth", "grasshopper" and "grasshopper".

An insect of the families Acrididae and Tettigoniidae. They live in a variety of places, but are most abundant in low-lying tropical forests, semi-arid areas, and grasslands. They have antennae, palps on their heads, cerci on their abdomens, and receptors on their legs that can sense touch. They have taste organs in their mouths, and olfactory organs on their antennae. They have eardrums on both sides of the first abdominal segment or at the base of the tibia of their forelegs for hearing. They have compound eyes for vision, and simple eyes for light. They are herbivorous, and a few species are important pests of crops. The femurs of their hind legs are thick and suitable for jumping. The males make sounds by rubbing their left and right wings together or by rubbing the ridges of their forewings with the sound files of their hind legs. Some species can also make sounds while flying. Some have specific habitats, such as the South American Marelliaremipes, which spends most of its life on floating plants, can swim, and lays eggs on aquatic plants. Locusts are generally large, with some species (such as Tropidacrislatriellei in South America) exceeding 11 centimeters in length. In some areas, locusts are eaten. Natural enemies include birds, frogs, and snakes.

Characteristics: Usually green, brown or black, with a large head and short antennae; the pronotum is hard and extends to the left and right like a saddle, and the midthorax and metathorax are fused and cannot move. The feet are well-developed, especially the muscles of the hind legs are strong and powerful, and the exoskeleton is hard, making it an expert in jumping. The tibia also has sharp saw spines, which are effective defensive weapons. The ovipositor does not have obvious protrusions, which is the biggest difference from katydids.
