CATDOLL: Are grasshoppers beneficial or harmful?

Grasshoppers are pests.

There are more than 10,000 species of grasshoppers in the world, of which about 300 species are harmful to agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry. Grasshoppers can be found everywhere except Antarctica and Eurasia north of 55° north latitude. The area where grasshoppers occur all year round in the world is as high as 46.8 million square kilometers, and one-eighth of the world's population is often harassed by grasshoppers.

There are more than 1,000 species of grasshoppers in my country, distributed in tropical and temperate grasslands and deserts around the world. Grasshoppers lay a large number of eggs. In areas where the infestation is serious, remove the soil and weeds more than 5 cm thick on the ridges and edges of the fields in autumn and spring, and expose the egg masses to the ground to dry or freeze to death. You can also thicken the ridges again and increase the thickness of the covering soil to prevent the hatched eggs from emerging from the ground.

Grasshoppers are locusts, animals of the family Acrididae in the order Orthoptera, also known as grasshoppers, grasshoppers, etc. Locusts mainly include migratory locusts and ground locusts. There are three types of migratory locusts in China: the East Asian migratory locust, the Asian migratory locust and the Tibetan migratory locust. Among them, the East Asian migratory locust has the widest distribution in China and causes the most serious damage. It is the main type of migratory locust that causes locust plagues in China.

Adults have the same diet as locust nymphs, both are herbivorous, and they need to supplement their nutrition strongly during the adult stage, accounting for more than 75% of their total food intake in their lifetime. They chew plant leaves and flower buds with their chewing mouthparts, leaving notches and holes. In severe cases, they will eat up the leaves and flower buds of large areas of plants, causing significant economic losses to agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry.
