CATDOLL: Characteristics of housefly breeding

Characteristics of housefly breeding

(1) Short life cycle The life cycle of houseflies is short. Under suitable temperature and humidity conditions, a generation is completed every 14-18 days. It usually takes only 10-11 days for maggots to develop from eggs to adults, and only 4-5 days for eggs to grow into adult maggots. This is much shorter than the life cycle of other insects.

(2) Strong reproductive capacity and high production efficiency The reproductive capacity of houseflies is amazing. According to Sun Gang et al., 480 breeding flies (larvae weighing 0.69 grams) produced a total larval weight of 1,086.7 grams in 16 days, an increase of 1,575 times; if the production space and experimental conditions allow, 1,711.6 kilograms of larvae can be produced after another 16 days; if the proliferation continues for three generations, it can reach 2,695.8 tons, an increase of nearly 4 billion times compared with the initial population. This means that once houseflies are given suitable living conditions, their reproduction will be considerable. As lower animals, although the assimilation efficiency of insects in the energy conversion of the ecosystem is only about half that of mammals, its production efficiency is 15-40 times that of mammals, which is unmatched by other methods of producing animal protein so far. If pigs and cows grow at this rate after birth, their weight will reach 325 kilograms and 7,500 kilograms respectively after 5 days.

(3) House flies have a varied diet and are fond of animal manure. They can survive in almost all types of organic decaying materials. Leftover agricultural and sideline products such as rice bran, wheat bran, bean dregs, distiller's grains, and industrial waste can all be used for maggot breeding. In particular, maggots are very fond of animal manure such as pig manure, cow manure, chicken manure, and duck manure. A livestock and poultry farm equipped with a maggot breeding farm is equivalent to establishing an insect protein feed factory. Animal manure that has been raised with maggots is odorless, fertile, and loose, and is a high-quality organic fertilizer. Maggots' ability to process feces is 10 times that of earthworms. This special conversion function is beyond the reach of other insects. Using animal manure to breed maggots is cheap and has low production costs. It can also turn waste into treasure and harm into benefit, which has far-reaching environmental benefits and social significance.

(4) Strong adaptability to the environment Houseflies often live in dirty places and are surrounded by countless germs, but they can remain safe and sound and will not be infected by these pathogens. This is due to their excellent immune function. Scientists have found that houseflies can produce a variety of effective substances against bacteria and viruses. At the International Life Science Symposium held in 1982, Professor Natori Shunji of the University of Tokyo published a sensational report. They extracted an "antibacterial active protein" with strong bactericidal effects from the secretions of houseflies. This protein has extremely strong bactericidal and antiviral abilities. As long as the concentration is one ten-thousandth, it can kill various bacteria and viruses. At the same time, an anti-cancer active protein was discovered, which has a strong inhibitory effect on cancer cells. In 1993, Professor Zhang Wenji of China Agricultural University and others extracted biologically active substances that have inhibitory effects on cotton wilt, damping-off, apple soft spot and other pathogens from the residues of housefly larvae feed. Another reason why houseflies do not get sick is that their licking and sucking mouthparts are both retractable and foldable, so they eat, spit and excrete at the same time. In this way, the germs they eat into their stomachs are discarded early before they have a chance to "settle down" and reproduce offspring.

(5) Fly maggot production is simple and easy. Housefly breeding is easy to control manually and can be carried out in a factory. Fly maggots are suitable for high-density breeding (one fly only needs 8-10 cm3 of space). A 50 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm fly cage can raise 10,000 to 12,000 adult flies. The domestic large-scale and factory production technology of fly maggots and the preparation technology of fly maggot biochemical products have gradually matured.
