CATDOLL: What kind of water should be used to raise turtles (can turtles be raised with tap water or river water?)

Can turtles be kept with tap water or river water?

It is OK to use tap water to raise small turtles. This is because it is normal for some bacteria to be found in natural water. Some of these bacteria are beneficial to turtles. In nature, turtles are able to maintain a healthy state because the bacteria in their bodies are balanced.

Tap water is basically neutral water, and its hardness and pH meet the requirements for raising water turtles, so there is no need to worry too much about this (except for some exceptional species, such as the drill, mata, Japanese stone turtle, nail neck, etc.). However, when tap water is used to raise water turtles, the chlorine must be removed. The main methods are drying method and chemical method.

If the beneficial bacteria are lost or the balance is broken in the turtle's body under artificial breeding conditions, the turtle may become sick or malnourished.

1. Raw water: refers to tap water that has just come out of the tap and has not been aired. The temperature of raw water is often a little different from the water temperature in the turtle container. The water contains more chlorine, which is harmful to turtles, especially to their eyes. However, tap water is also divided by region. Not all tap water in all regions contains high chlorine, but it is safer to air it.

2. New water: This is raw water that has been dried, left to stand, and settled for about 1-2 days. It is clean water that is equal to or similar to the water temperature for raising turtles. New water is pollution-free and can be used by turtles, and the water temperature is almost the same as the surrounding environment.

3. Stale water: This is dirty water that has been used in the turtle's container and contains feces, debris, and dirt at the bottom of the turtle tank. This includes water that has not been changed in the tank for a long time. This is called stale water. Stale water contains many organic and inorganic impurities. If it stays for too long, it will cause certain harm to the turtle.

4. Old water: It is a general term for the clean water in the turtle tank that is light green, green, old green or green-brown. Among them, light green water is the best and is called the best green water. There are more green algae floating in old water, which are also good supplementary feed for fish. If turtles and fish are raised together, fish can have a food source. This kind of green water has less organic matter that has been decomposed and has more dissolved oxygen. If turtles are raised in this kind of water, most of the turtles raised will be healthy and active. This is also the reason why green water is very popular.

But don’t pursue green water deliberately. As long as the water quality is maintained good, the effect will be good.
