The easiest way to catch crabs Introduction to crab fishing methods

1. Crab trap fishing method: This method uses the principle of phototropism of hairy crabs when they come out at night. A crab trap is placed in the shallows of the Shuiquepiku, and the crab trap is inserted into the bottom of the water with a bamboo pole, keeping the upper part above the water surface; after the sun sets and it gets dark, it is illuminated with light. When the hairy crabs see the light, they will crawl towards the light and gather. The crab trap blocks the way for the crabs to crawl, and the crabs will climb up along the crab trap. At this time, the person guarding the crab trap can easily catch the crabs with his hands or a net. This fishing method is not efficient and requires a lot of manpower.

2. Wire net fishing method: Wire net fishing method (the most commonly used method); put a long wire net in the water hidden cover, and the wire net will be suspended in the middle of the water under the action of the float at the end of the net. When the crab swims, it will touch the net. Because the wire net is very fine, once the crab touches it, it will be tightly entangled by the net and cannot escape. After waiting for a while, the wire net is put away and the crab entangled in the net can be removed. This fishing method is simple, efficient, low-cost, and can also be operated mechanically, which greatly saves manpower.

How to catch river crabs and what bait to use

If you use a crab cage to catch crabs, you can use smelly pig liver, chicken liver, loach, and eel as bait. You can also use chicken intestines or other aquatic offal, but they must be made smelly before being used as bait.

Remember not to use pasta as bait for catching crabs, because this will attract small fish, and crabs cannot stay where small fish gather. Crabs also like the corpses of small fish, shrimps or insects, so it is okay to use these as bait.

Things to note when choosing crabs:

1. When choosing hairy crabs, users must first understand their characteristics, which are green back, white belly, golden claws, and yellow hair. Pay attention to observation during the selection process. The crab shells are bright, shiny, and dark green in color. They are usually thick and solid. The ones with protruding belly buttons are fat and full of fat.

2. When the user picks up the crab, he should feel that it is heavy enough, so that he can pick the hairy crab with rich meat and plump crab meat. The crab legs are covered with hair, and they are generally fat and strong.

3. Users can turn the hairy crab over. If it can quickly turn back with its legs, it means it is very active, which is also good for preserving it after purchase. You can also see if the hairy crab is responsive. If you touch its eyes with your hands or branches, its eyeballs will flicker flexibly, it will react quickly, or it will spit white bubbles from its mouth, which means it is still fresh and vigorous.

Crab Catching Method

1. Catching crabs with crab traps

The crab net is a simple barrier-type fence-foil crab-catching tool made of bamboo. Its structure is to use thin bamboo poles or thick reeds to weave foil, and the net is set up in a pre-planned formation in favorable areas of rivers, ports, and lakes with water flow. The lower end of the net is inserted into the bottom of the water, and the upper end is above the water surface. The whole net is regularly curved. Some drum-shaped crab baskets are hung on the upper end of the net. There is an entrance for river crabs and funnel-shaped inverted whiskers at the bottom of the basket. There is a cover on the top, and the middle is the gathering place for river crabs. When river crabs migrate into the sea through the waterway, they are intercepted by the crab nets across the water surface. After being blocked, they climb up along the nets or drill into the crab baskets. When fishing, the crabs on the nets or in the crab baskets are caught with a sea scoop.

2. Crab trawling

The crab trawl is a wingless single-bag trawl fishing gear, consisting of a rectangular net with a folded waist and a shallow bag net. The crab trawl is driven by a single boat. On one side of the boat, a bamboo net is extended from the bow and stern, and 8 to 12 nets are tied. The operation area should be selected on the rapid water surface of the deep water channel. When placing the net, first drag the sail and row to the river channel, so that the ship is horizontally on the starboard side to receive the current, put the net into the water, and drag it downstream. At this time, the river crabs will rush into the net from the mouth of the net. After entering the net, some river crabs crawl forward along the back of the net, encounter the blocking net, fold and enter the side net. The other part stays in the net bag. Every 1 hour, the net is lifted once and moved to another place. At the same time, the river crabs can be poured out from the net bag and the net bag.

Crab trawling is a major method of catching crabs in the Yangtze River. This fishing gear is also used in some lakes. This fishing method is widely used in the Yangtze River estuary from Anqing in Anhui to Shanghai, such as the coastal areas of Chongming and Hengsha, the Huangpu River and Dianshan Lake in Shanghai, and Hongze Lake and Gaobao Lake in Jiangsu. It has the characteristics of small nets, easy operation, and full use of water flow. It is an effective tool for catching natural river crabs. However, there must be no sunken ships, reefs, and quicksand in the operating area, as encountering them will destroy the trawling net.

3. Catching crabs with Jiliang crab net

There are three types of crab nets: blocking net, pulling net and silk net.

(1) Blocking net: This is a river-blocking type of fishing gear, mainly used in Anhui Province. When operating, the long net is bent vertically and laid in the river. The river crabs are blocked and enter the net bag. Every 1 to 2 hours, the boat goes to the net setting location to take the crabs. The boat should be sailed to the leeward of the net, so that the boat is parallel to the net mouth. The person is at the bow of the boat, pulls the line to raise the net, and checks forward along the upper line. Pay close attention to whether the net shakes in the water. If there is shaking, gently pull the net. After seeing the crab, lift the upper and lower lines together and take the crab out of the net.

(2) Pulling net: It is a river-blocking fishing gear in the shape of a strip. During operation, one end of the net is fixed on the shore, and then it is laid out after the wax has subsided. The net is then pulled ashore, allowing the blocked crabs to enter the net bag and be caught.

(3) Wire net: It is a single-layer gillnet fishing gear, commonly known as twisted wire net, in strip shape. When operating, the net is laid across the river, standing upright on the bottom like a wall, cutting off the escape route of river crabs, causing them to become entangled in the net and be captured.

1. Catch river crabs

"When autumn begins, crabs' feet start to itch." At this time, river crabs will begin to crawl from fresh water to the sea for their annual reproductive migration. This is the best time to catch river crabs naturally. The fishing time in the north and south differs by about one month due to the weather. It is from September to October in the north and from October to November in the south.

The harvesting time of artificially cultivated river crabs depends on the breeding management conditions. When using crab seedlings to directly cultivate adult crabs, it takes two autumns, that is, from April to May of the first year, to September to November of the second year before they can be harvested. In order to improve the efficiency of fisheries, according to market rules, the harvesting time is extended to December as much as possible until around the Spring Festival. When using one-year-old crabs for breeding, they can be harvested from September to November of the same year until around the Spring Festival.
